Roll up, roll up for the greatest Coventry food news in town! For your festive delectation this week, we’ve got collaborations! Celebrations! Expansions! New openings! And much, much more! So let’s get this show on the road with…
Congratulations! This week we start off with warm congratulations to Fargo favourite Leave it to Esmie, which has been included in Big Seven Travel website’s list of the top twenty-five Caribbean restaurants in Britain. Praising Leave it to Esmie, the website said “The menu is super authentic, stays close to the owner’s roots and is inspired by family recipes. Highlights include an Oxtail stew, stewed down in a rich dark sauce of tomatoes, herbs ‘n’ spices, and finished off with butter beans and delicious ‘spinners’ (tiny dumplings).” (And did you know that Esmie’s is among the Fargo Village traders who’ll be showcasing their wares at Fargo’s Christmas Cabin, part of Broadgate’s Christmas Market? Pick up some delicious sauces without having to leave the city centre!)
Collaborations! Here at Food Covolution, few things warm our cockles more than news of local food and drink businesses collaborating with and supporting each other – so we were delighted to hear that at Earlsdon’s top pan-Asian restaurant Street, you can now enjoy fabulous ales from our old friends Dhillon’s Brewery as accompaniment to your meal. And in another very welcome collab, Coventry vegan sweet-treat legends Little Vegan Bakery have begun supplying cakes to Curiositea Cafe at Warwick University. Meanwhile, Hertford Street coffee house Bean and Leaf is trialling sales of Proof Bakery’s baklava and cinnamon buns over the counter! No pre-ordering, no online paying, just a lovely treat to enjoy with your coffee. If you want the trial to turn permanent, you know what you’ve got to do…!
Celebrations!: The ancient and atmospheric Undercroft at St Mary’s must have seen many Christmases in its time, but you can celebrate Christmas 2019 in style with one of their Festive Afternoon Teas! Available throughout December, the tea features a selection of special seasonal sandwiches, including turkey, cranberry and stuffing, salmon and cucumber and mature Cheddar cheese with ale chutney, followed by mini mince pies, scones with cream and fruit jam, ginger tiffen bites and macroons. £9.75 per person, pre-booking essential.
Expansions! Divine Coventry Market plastic-free stall COGS has announced plans to expand. In a post on its Facebook page, COGS owner Rachel said “I am looking at expanding in the New Year … it would mean moving stalls in the market – but only to a space behind me… there is also a possibility that this will cover 4 stalls… not just one.. a massive move and will mean that I will be able to offer a huge selection of foods which I haven’t got space for… first up will be a nut butter machine – so you can grind your own butters – with cashews, walnuts and almond butters amongst the options… We’ll be able to offer you a range of Proof Bakery items – on pre-orders which can be made at the stall… I’d love to get a juicing machine too… so you can take home freshly juiced oranges… there are other ideas fermenting in my head with oils and vinegars on refill, an expanded range of household refills. I’ll need to crowd fund to buy some of this equipment – and will work on how to do this”. PS: Plastic-reduction news extra – the market now also has a special bin where you can deposit your unwanted carrier bags for re-use by shoppers who have forgotten to bring a bag of their own!
New menus! Basement Browns, Coventry’s Platinum Award-winning independent pizza house, has recently unveiled a new menu. Additions set to get you salivating are Meat Mountain and Cowboy pizza, speciality calzone, nachos and a great selection of gins. Meanwhile, recently re-decorated Emily’s Cafe in Earlsdon has a new lunch menu. Emily’s said “we have added some delicious choices including sirloin steak salad with crispy onions served with a homemade garlic baguette and Halloumi and chilli jam panini”.
New openings! Newly-arrived at Fargo Village is Dandy’s Coffee Shop (in the old Backhaus&Co). I’ve not visited yet, so for the moment, this is just a heads up to let you know it’s there.
New month! No new month would be complete without a new special from E11evanes Brunch Bar, and for December it’s a very fitting…Festive Panini with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, crispy bacon and brie! Hoorah!
New baby! Ha! You didn’t see that one coming, did you! But very special congratulations are in order for Danielle and Adam at Dirty Kitch, who in the midst of all the stress of opening an iconic new restaurant, have also found time to welcome a new baby into the world. Some people just don’t like doing things by halves! UPDATE: (5th December) Stand down on that one. Looks like it was a false alarm. But the baby IS coming soon!
