In this week’s Coventry Food News: green, black and ginger!
Say ‘hello’ to two new independent food and drink businesses in the city centre! In the past week, Bean and Brunch coffee shop has opened its doors in Sherbourne Arcade (off Lower Precinct), while Smithford Way has welcomed The Den Grill and Wine Bar. Bean and Brunch offers a range of teas and coffees, as well as baguettes, sandwiches, cheese toasties and sweet treats such as muffins and pain au chocolat. The Den specialises in flamed/grilled meat and fish and also boasts an Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired menu including mezze, tagine and mousakka, plus chef’s daily specials and, as befits a wine bar, an extensive wine list.
More reasons to visit The Lazy Monkey Bar and Kitchen! Starting this Wednesday (27th) at 8pm, they are teaming up with Mixdown Events to host a weekly open mic night for aspiring local musicians! (This was formerly held at Drapers Bar). Lazy Monkey is also proud to be one of the few Coventry stockists of Thums Up, India’s most popular soft drink.
Fancy a free coffee? As part of its National Lottery #Thankstoyou promotion, Alfred’s Cafe (Herbert Art Gallery and Museum) is offering a free filter coffee to all customers with a valid lottery ticket. Offer ends December 1st. Only one free coffee per person.
Earlsdon’s favourite South East Asian restaurant, the wonderful Street, has launched a new menu and the big news is: Katsu is back! Apart from that, you’ll be spoilt for choice as usual, with Asian tapas. bao buns, tappanyaki, curries of the world, Chinese and a brand new Japanese Junk section! Lots of options for vegans and those following gluten-free diets, plus an extended gin and craft ale menu!
Binley vegetarian takeaway/catering business Geeta’s Kitchen has joined forces with food waste fighting organisation Too Good To Go. To be honest, I’m not entirely clear about how this works or what it entails, but it certainly sounds interesting. On its website, Too Good To Go describes itself as “An app that lets everyone do their bit to reduce waste, while also getting delicious food and supporting local businesses. The businesses get to reduce their waste and also have potential new customers try out their food. Both contribute to a better environment”. Coventry customers can use the app to order Geeta’s special Meal Magic Boxes. (Download app here. Please be aware that none of this is meant to imply that food accessed through Too Good To Go is supplied free of charge.)
Regular customers of Coventry Station cookie legends Wicked Cookies are also being given the chance to do their bit for the environment. For every twenty completed Wicked Cookie loyalty cards redeemed by Wicked customers (entitling them to a free cookie), Wicked will pledge to plant a tree in a deforested area of the world through the One Tree Planted scheme.
Are you feeling Christmassy yet?! Well you might well do when you hear that Wyken peanut butter sensation Hann.d.made has released its range of special Christmas flavours! Hann.d.made is now taking Christmas pre-orders for all their regular peanut butter flavours, plus Christmas gift boxes plus…seasonal white chocolate and cranberry, apple and ginger and dark chocolate crunchy nut! Get in!
More good news! Did you know that Coventry has a brand-new 100% plant-based baking and catering company? Green Kitchen has launched with a cake menu featuring cakes and cupcakes ranging from classic Victoria sponge to coconut and chai carrot cake to super-indulgent triple chocolate cake cake with chocolate ganche, chocolate buttercream and chocolate shards – but if none of that hits the spot, you’re very welcome to contact them to discuss your specific requirements. Want to test out some samples? Green Kitchen will have a stall at the Drapers Bar and Kitchen Christmas Fayre on December 14th.
And finally…here at Food Covolution, we’re not big fans of the carnival of over-consumption that is Black Friday, but we’re sure you’ll want to know that this Friday (29th), Coventry market’s plastic-free stall COGS of Coventry is offering 10% off all loose goods. Owner Rachel won us over when she said “it’s our little take on revolution!”. As a project founded on revo(Covo)lution, how could we resist?!
Stop Press: Changamiri Coffee by Kings also have a Black Friday sale, with up to 35% off their coffees!
